A Dichotomy on Schreier Sets

چکیده

We show that the Schreier sets Sα (α < ω1) satisfy the following dichotomy property. For every hereditary collection F of finite subsets of N, either there exists infinite M = (mi)1 ⊆ N such that Sα(M) = {{mi : i ∈ E} : E ∈ Sα} ⊆ F , or there exist infinite M = (mi)1 , N ⊆ N such that F [N ](M) = {{mi : i ∈ F} : F ∈ F and F ⊂ N} ⊆ Sα.

Reverse Mathematics of the Nielsen-Schreier Theorem

The Nielsen-Schreier Theorem states that every subgroup of a free group is free. To formalize this theorem in weak subsystems of second order arithmetic, one has to choose between defining a subgroup in terms of a set of group elements and defining it in terms of a set of generators. We show that if subgroups are defined by sets, then the Nielsen-Schreier Theorem is provable in RCA0, while if s...

Context-free pairs of groups II — Cuts, tree sets, and random walks

This is a continuation of the study, begun by Ceccherini-Silberstein and Woess (2009) [5], of context-free pairs of groups and the related context-free graphs in the sense of Muller and Schupp (1985) [22]. The graphs under consideration are Schreier graphs of a subgroup of some finitely generated group, and context-freeness relates to a tree-like structure of those graphs. Instead of the cones ...

A Note on Almost Perfect Probabilistically Checkable Proofs of Proximity

Probabilistically checkable proofs of proximity (PCPP) are proof systems where the verifier is given a 3SAT formula, but has only oracle access to an assignment and a proof. The verifier accepts a satisfying assignment with a valid proof, and rejects (with high enough probability) an assignment that is far from all satisfying assignments (for any given proof). In this work, we focus on the type...

An amalgamation of the Banach spaces associated with James and Schreier, Part I: Banach-space structure

We create a new family of Banach spaces, the James–Schreier spaces, by amalgamating two important classical Banach spaces: James’ quasi-reflexive Banach space on the one hand and Schreier’s Banach space giving a counterexample to the Banach–Saks property on the other. We then investigate the properties of these James–Schreier spaces, paying particular attention to how key properties of their ‘a...

On Borel Mappings and Σ-ideals Generated by Closed Sets

We obtain some results about Borel maps with meager fibers on completely metrizable separable spaces. The results are related to a recent dichotomy by Sabok and Zapletal, concerning Borel maps and σ-ideals generated by closed sets. In particular, we give a “classical” proof of this dichotomy. We shall also show that for certain natural σ-ideals I generated by closed sets in compact metrizable s...
